The Danberrys

WEDNESDAY 6th December 7:30pm

Described as ‘a rhythmically seductive and emotionally connecting band’, The Danberrys are led by Tennessee-born couple Ben DeBerry and Dorothy Daniel – a truly unique pair of artists hailing from East Nashville, Tennessee.

The pair have built a special indie-folk vibe around Dorothy’s luxuriously smoky voice and Ben’s intricate acoustic guitar flatpicking, with a sound drawing influences from bluegrass, country, blues and the funk/soul traditions.

The Danberrys offer inspired songwriting delivered with raw emotion, distinct vocal harmonies, and dynamic, top-notch musicianship.

Performing as a trio – with Kiwi Vanessa McGowan of Tattletale Saints (previous visitors to Katikati Folk Club) on upright bass – The Danberrys show takes the listener through the near limitless nature of the Americana genre.

All three of the band’s albums have been nominated for a number of independent music awards, including Best EP; two nominations for 2016’s Give & Receive for Best Americana Album; and a recent 2016 win for the track Lovesong in the Best Bluegrass Song category.

Their songs have a smart, up-to-the-minute quality …
yet a large part of their attraction and strength lies in the traditions they draw on in varying degrees.

Jug bands, bluegrass, gospel and country music’s love affair with Fender Telecasters, here realised through DeBerry’s sure, expressive acoustic flatpicking, all feed into song arrangements creating a momentous groove under strong and close two- and sometimes three-part harmonies.
